Is The Google Android Press Event Exciting News?

Several of our favorite news sources are announcing that Google has sent invitations out to join them next week for an "Android press gathering" in Mountain View, with invitations stating:

With the launch of the first Android-powered device just over a year ago, we've seen how a powerful, open platform can spur mobile product innovation. And this is just the beginning of what's possible.

Please join us in Mountain View on January 5, for an Android press gathering.

The question begs, what its the exciting news, or is there any?

Most speculation is that it's likely a Nexus One announcement and most (if not all) of your nagging questions about new phone will get answered. But is that all that exciting? We've seen all the speculation and rumors over the new phone and plenty of specifications have been released. Would that really be worthy of an Android press gathering? I'm wondering if there isn't more to this announcement than just the Nexus One announcement.
