Blizzard Investigates Says Diablo III Servers Not Hacked

Over the past week Blizzard has been investigating claims that the company's Diablo III servers had been hacked. Thursday they reiterated their position that while the accounts had been accessed their was no verifiable evidence that the servers themselves had been breached.

In an update to the game's official forums at Battle.net Blizzard addressed security concerns, and questions related to reports from earlier this week.

Over the past couple of days, players have expressed concerns over the possibility of Battle.net account compromises. First and foremost, we want to make it clear that the Battle.net and Diablo III servers have not been compromised. In addition, the number of Diablo III players who've contacted customer service to report a potential compromise of their personal account has been extremely small. In all of the individual Diablo III-related compromise cases we've investigated, none have occurred after a physical Battle.net Authenticator or Battle.net Mobile Authenticator app was attached to the player's account, and we have yet to find any situation where a Diablo III player's account was accessed outside of "traditional" compromise methods (i.e. someone logging using an account's login email and password).

This comes as a response to several earlier reports that user were logging complaint that their accounts have been raided and their virtual, money and goods on Blizzard's Battle.net gaming site had been stolen. Blizzard still hasn't offered and official account of how and why these accounts had been breached. There had been suggest that account compromises are occurring in ways outside of "traditional" methods such as "session spoofing" a player’s identity after he or she joins a public game.

Blizzard specifically said it has examined this possibility and found no reason to believe accounts are being hacked in this way and even said such an exploit is "technically impossible."

In addition to addressing possible security concerns Blizzard also revealed it has made several hotfixes to address gameplay issues in Diablo III since the game launched. A collection of these changes are available at the game's website.
