Microsoft Cuts Zune Prices, Releases Zune 3.1 Firmware

Just in time for the holidays Microsoft slashed price on its Zune media players and accessories.

According to ZuneInsider.com, the new Zune prices are $179 for the 16 gigabyte version (versus $199 for Apple’s 16 GB iPod nano), $139 for the 8 GB version (versus $149 for Apple’s 8 GB iPod) and a 4 GB Zune model coming in at $99. Accessories like the Zune Car Pack, Dock Pack and Home/AV Pack received price cuts of up to $20.

Pricing at two of our advertisers, Buy.com and Newegg.com, don't yet reflect the price cuts. The
Black 8GB Microsoft Zune is currently priced $149.99 at Newegg and $143.80 + Shipping at Buy.com

Microsoft has also released firmware version 3.1 for all models of the Zune MP3 player, and an update to the Zune PC software. The updated firmware adds three new games: Checkers; Sudoku; and Space Battle; as well as a new multiplayer mode for the existing Texas Hold 'Em card game. The multiplayer mode takes advantage of the Zune's Wi-Fi, letting players connect to other players with Zunes. The new Zune Checkers game also supports wireless two-player gameplay.

To get the new update, use the PC software, just click settings: check for updates. If you’re new to Zune, you can download the software for free at www.zune.net.
