Apple Releases iPhone 2.2 Firmware Update

Apple has released iPhone OS 2.2 and iPhone OS for iPod touch 2.2 fixing more than a dozen security vulnerabilities and adding several new features, including Google Street Views to the iPhone's mapping tool.

Among the twelve security updates were three fixes to Safari, three fixes for Passcode Lock a Webkit fix and a networking fix that prevented the lowering of the encryption in the PPTP VPN app.

The new update added a couple of new features, one of which is direct podcast downloading. The new features allows you to stream or download audio and video podcasts over both Wi-Fi and cellular network using the iTunes Wi-Fi application on the handset. More information here.

The feature many are considering to to be the most significant in the v2.2 firmware update is a major overhaul of the Maps application and the addition of Google Maps and Street View.

With street view you can view street level photographs, find businesses such as restaurants, get directions and even get schedules for public transit. According to the Google Maps Blog, Google Maps has schedules for transportation systems in more than 100 cities worldwide, including New York, Tokyo, Montréal, Zürich, and Perth. A few of the other minor changes to the iPhone's software included reliability and stability fixes for Mail and Safari, sound-quality improvements for voice-mail playback and, in a terse notice, changes aimed at a "decrease in call setup failures and dropped calls."
