ATI Re-Branding Radeon HD 5700 Series To Radeon HD 6700 Series

Re-branding of GPUs is often a confusing situation for consumers. Many times shopped see a higher series number and think the are getting a better GPU when in fact in many cases they are getting the exact same model with a new flashier name. In some rare cases you might even be getting a worse GPU by looking at series models alone. That is why I always suggest you do your research and verify what you are buying.

This week ATI implemented the companies plans to re-brand the Radeon HD 5700 series to the a newly created HD 6700 series, by listing the Radeon HD 6770 and HD 6750 on its website. For now, the new cards are listed as available only to OEMs, however that won't stop consumers from being a little confused.

So to alleviate some of that confusion let me first say, as far as specifications go, there are no changes between the 5700 and 6700 series with the two exceptions of OpenGL 4.1 support and HDMI 1.4a support. Visually speaking you can see a different-looking cooler shroud on the reference-design graphics cards. Other than that, they're the same exact cards internally.

The HD 6770 is based on the 40 nm Juniper silicon, with 800 VLIW5 stream processors, and 1 GB of GDDR5 memory over a 128-bit wide memory interface. The HD 6750 on the other hand has 720 stream processors. There's no information at present on when (or if) AMD plans to release this to the consumer market.

Unlock Your Radeon HD 6950 To An HD 6970 Via Firmware Unlock

It has been common practice over the years to release GPUs and CPUs built on the same design only with some of the features disabled in order to lower the cost. A few weeks ago AMD released the Radeon HD 6970 and Radeon HD 6950 both cards where based on the same reference design, same chips and same base configuration. The difference, the HD 6950 was clocked down to an 800mhz GPU clock and 1250mhz memory clock with only 1408 unified shaders versus the HD 6970 which features a 880 GPU clock, 1375 memory clock and 1536 unified shaders.

According to a recent post over at TechPowerUp, with few basic steps and a few pieces of software the new Radeon HD 6950 can be unlocked and transformed to a Radeon HD 6970 by unlocking 128 unified shaders and overclocking your HD 6950.

Full instructions along with links for all the software you'll need are available here. Unlocking the additional shaders is done by flashing the card with an HD 6970 BIOS. Overclocking can be achieved with any of your favorite GPU clocking applications.

There is no guarantee that your card will overclock to the higher speeds or that your card will handle the unlocking correctly. However with AMD's new dual bios option that allows for easy recovery should something go wrong you really can't miss.

$11,000 XFX HD 5970 Auctioned on eBay The Real Deal

$11,000 for a new GPU, you've gotta be kidding me right? Well that's the current price of a limited edition XFX HD 5970 Black Edition found on eBay. The card numbered #68 of 1000 has been confirmed by XFX as the "real deal".

The card and auction, much like a recent YouTube video are all a part of an elaborate viral marketing strategy. XFX originally posted the video showing two guys breaking into XFX and snagging the card. Then the company released a warning to registered consumers, indicating that the hot hardware is now up for sale on the Internet, and to stay away. There was even mention of a criminal investigation.



Following the hoax XFX then added a caption at the bottom of the eBay listing, saying that the auction of #68 was legit, and that the winning bidder would be committed into purchasing the item. Bidders must be serious about getting their hands on the limited cards. As of post time there have been 23 total bids and the auction has topped the $11,000 mark.

I for one think its a bit ridiculous to spend $11k on that card, but hey what do I know.

ATI Releases The New Radeon HD 5670

ati logoToday ATI takes the wraps of their newest mid/low range cards, the new Radeon 5600 series, more specifically Radeon HD 5670.

The new cards; fully support Microsoft DirectX 11 as well as featuring ATI's Eyefinity technology. Priced at about $100 USD these new budget minded cards are in direct competition against NVIDIA's GeForce GT 240 and the much older Geforce 9800GT products.

AMD has nicknamed the 40-nm chip based Radeon HD 5670's GPU "Redwood," keeping with the naming scheme of its previously released DirectX 11 Evergreen family. The new cards will come in either 512MB or 1GB version featuring a 775MHz core, and 1GHz(4GHz data rate) on the GDDR5 RAM. With a 128-bit memory bus giving; the card 64GB/sec of memory bandwidth.

Reading the reviews shows these new mainstream DX 11 cards from ATI to be a hit. They perform well against the older ATI cards and most of the NVIDIA offerings from the same price range. The cards don't offer the performance figures that would be desirable to the hard core gamer but they do offer a solid mainstream bang-for-buck gaming solution.

XFX Releases Their First Radeon HD-Powered 4000 Series Graphics Cards

XFX, following its recently announced collaboration with AMD, today introduced its first Radeon HD-powered 4000 series cards, the XFX Radeon HD 4870, XFX Radeon HD 4850, XFX Radeon HD 4830, XFX Radeon HD 4650 and XFX Radeon HD 4350.

All five models feature exceptional memory bandwidth, board power and compute power as well as a number of industry-firsts. For example, the XFX Radeon HD 4870 is the first graphics card with GDDR5 memory.

The XFX Radeon HD 4870 (HD-487A-ZDFC) features 1.0 GB of DDR5 memory operating at 3600 Mhz, a 750 Mhz GPU clock and 800 stream processing units. Other key features are: TeraScale Graphics Engine, Unified Superscalar Shader Architecture, Accelerated Video Transcoding (AVT), ATI PowerPlay Technology, ATI CrossFireX support and DirectX 10.1 support.

The XFX Radeon HD 4850 (HD-485X-YDFC) features 512 MB of DDR3 memory operating at 1990 Mhz, a 625 Mhz GPU clock and 800 stream processing units.
