Dell's Macbook Air Killer

dell adamo logoRumors have hit the web following a short lived post on luxury products website Uptownlife.net that Dell will be creating a new ultra-light, ultra-thin, Macbook Air killer called the “Adamo Thirteen”.

The rumors all began with a NY Times BITS blog post which showed an extract from UptownLife.net which read: “Rumor has it that Dell is coming out with a computer called Adamo that will rival the MacBook Air.” Uptownlife.net has since removed its reference to Dell’s Adamo product and marketing material.

Dell spokesperson Bob Kaufman latter made a confusing confirmation that the Adamo image used in the Uptown Life article was a genuine Dell advertisement. "We did this to wake up the personal computing category and create some buzz," Kaufman said of Adamo ad. Kaufman later indicated that Dell was only confirming the “Adamo by Dell” image and not the text confirming that Dell was working on a “rival to the MacBook Air” which is quoted in this post.

Dell has recently registered the trademarks of "Adamo" and "Adamo by Dell." The company has also set up the Adamo by dell website, which currently only bears a landing page. The trademarks cover computer hardware, including possibly desktops and notebooks, which may encompass the rumored Adamo Thirteen.

Over the weekend TG Daily dug through Googles Cached pages to gather an information on what they speculate might be the specs of the new notebook.

TG Daily suggests the Adamo Thirteen will feature an ultra-thin 3.5 mm (0.14”) 13” screen anIntel 45 nm Core 2 Duo processor. Optical drive options are likely to include a 8x slot-load DVD burner or an optional 2x Blu-ray/DVD-RW drive (with SATA interface). The option list includes Displayport-to-VGA, Displayport-to-HDMI and Displayport-to-DVI converters.

It is suggested that Dell will be offering solid state disk drives (SSDs) throughout the product line. The capacity is said to be (well beyond 100 GB), which suggests that Dell will be offering either 128 GB, Intel’s 160 GB or possibly Samsung’s 256 GB drive, which went into mass-production recently. Strangely enough, Dell has not listed SSDs for the Adamo, but included (external) 2.5” 5400 rpm hard drives with 250 GB and 500 GB capacity, as well as an 8 GB USB memory key.

At this point everything is pure speculation, however TG Daily cited sources saying that the new Adamo line is expected to be unveiled at CES. Reports on DigiTimes suggest the new Adamo could be priced upwards of $3,000.

Toshiba Introduces 3 GPU Hybrid SLI Laptop

In a press release today Nvidia announced that Toshiba has introduced what they are claiming to be the "World’s First Laptops With Three NVIDIA GPUs".

When Toshiba set out to reset the bar for high performance gaming laptops and revamp its flagship gaming line, the company turned to NVIDIA for its expertise in visual computing. The combined efforts of both companies resulted in Toshiba's most powerful gaming laptop to date featuring the new highly integrated GeForce 9400M graphics processing unit (GPU) along with a pair of NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS enthusiast-class GPUs. The Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q708 and X305-Q706, the first pair of laptops to incorporate three powerful NVIDIA GPUs, gives users a choice between maximum performance and quiet operation.

“We wanted to deliver an extreme-performance gaming machine that gives gamers a complete, non-compromising system in a laptop form factor,” said Carl Pinto, vice president of product development, digital products division for Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc. “The combination of the NVIDIA GPUs and chipset allowed us to achieve a high level of performance, quality and flexibility that our customers are asking for, at a competitive starting price of $1,999.”

The unique design featuring three NVIDIA GPUs enables the Qosmio X305-Q708 and X305-Q706 laptops to deliver scorching gaming performance by combining the horsepower of two discrete GeForce 9800M GTS GPUs with NVIDIA SLI® technology, and allows the option of switching to a quiet operation mode with NVIDIA Hybrid SLI technology. In Hybrid SLI operation, the powerful 9800M GTS GPUs are powered down and graphics operation is transferred to the GeForce 9400M GPU. As a result, Toshiba Qosmio laptops are able to deliver record-breaking gaming performance at high resolutions, while enabling a quiet state when powering other types of Windows Vista applications.

“The Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q708 is a world-class gaming laptop that uses NVIDIA graphics processors to solve real problems and add real value for notebook users,” said Rene Haas, general manager of the notebook business unit at NVIDIA. “We were thrilled to be able to partner with Toshiba to deliver this ground-breaking new product.”

The Qosmio X305-Q708 and X305-Q706 laptops are now available for purchase directly from Toshiba at www.toshibadirect.com.

This announcement for Toshiba continues the momentum for the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M high performance GPU with system core logic. For more information on the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M GPU go to GeForce 9400 mGPU. For information on NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS discrete GPUs go to NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS discrete GPUs.

The Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q708 gaming laptop features an Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9300 quad-core processor, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, dual nVidia GeForce 9800M GTS GPUs in an SLI setup, plus a dedicated 1GB of onboard DDR3 graphics memory, a 128GB SSD, 320GB 7,200 RPM SATA drive, dual-layer DVD writer, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and Windows Vista Ultimate.

Specs also include a full-sized keyboard with a ten-key number pad, four Harman Kardon speakers, HDMI / DisplayPort connectors, 1.3-megapixel webcam, Wireless USB / USB Sleep-and-Charge technologies and a 17-inch TruBrite LCD with 2560x1600 resolution.

You get all that for the incredibly low price of $4,199.99! Toshiba does have other X305 models starting at just $1,499.99 without the triple SLI.

ASUS Planning 12-inch ZX Series Notebook & $200 Eee PC in 2009

According to reports at DigiTimes ASUS is planning to introduce a 12-inch ultra-thin notebook that has a similar design to the recently launched high-end Eee PC 10.2-inch S101 model.

The new product will be part of the company's notebook line-up and although the difference between notebooks and netbooks is blury, Jerry Shen, president of Asustek emphasized that any device with a display larger than 10.x-inches is not a netbook.

According to earlier reports by DigiTimes Shen has also promised that ASUS will launch an Eee PC priced at $200 in 2009. At the same time they will be phasing out 7- and 8.9-inch Eee PCs to be replaced by 10-inch models. That way, the president believes, ASUS will be able to take a full 30-percent of the netbook market next year, estimated at between 6 and 7.5 million units.

It sounds like a $200 10-inch Eee PC might be in the works, but we won't be holding our breath.

AMD Puma Platform Notebooks Now On The Prowl

amd puma logoToday at Computex 2008, AMD announced the availability of its next-generation, "Puma" notebook platform, delivering the ultimate HD visual performance and increased energy efficiency on the go. This next-generation AMD notebook platform will also serve as the foundation for new AMD Business Class, AMD GAME! and AMD LIVE!™ notebook solutions.

The "Puma Series" will feature the new AMD Turion X2 Ultra Dual-Core Mobile Processors with ATI Radeon HD 3000 Series Graphics for superior 3D performance and HD image quality, with industry-leading wireless for greater throughput and range. AMD customers overwhelmingly embrace the new platform, as evidenced by more than double the number of design wins compared to the last major AMD Turion processor introduction.

Along with the release of the new Puma line AMD announced the launch of ATI XGP (External Graphics Platform) Technology, a new external PCI Express (PCIe) 2.0 graphics platform, designed to deliver enthusiast-class desktop graphic performance and true multimedia upgradeability to notebooks. ATI XGP is an exclusive technology that capitalizes on PCIe 2.0 to deliver enthusiast-class graphics via a connected cable to an externally powered and cooled device.

ati xgp

ATI says that the device is externally powered and externally cooled so it won’t place demands on the notebook. Bandwidth in both directions is reported to be 4 Gbytes/s; ATI says that other external graphics solutions were limited in bandwidth.

The XGP platform is optimized to work with the new AMD Turion X2 Ultra notebook platforms. ATI XGP Technology is being first launched with the newly announced ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3800 series. As an industry first for notebooks, ATI XGP Technology delivers multi-GPU capabilities of scalable performance with ATI CrossFireX™ technology. The additional high bandwidth of the included USB 2.0 connectivity allows users to connect to a wide variety of USB-based devices, including external TV tuners, external Blu-ray players, and much more.

MacBook Air Recieves More Competition

Miniaturized versions of the Intel Core 2 Duo processors specially developed for Apple's new MacBook Air will soon be used by other PC vendors in systems. A move that will most likely be creating competition for what has been labeled as the world's lightest and thinnest notebook.

The MacBook Air comes with miniaturized version of Intel Core 2 Duo Merom family processors. The processors unning at either 1.6 GHz or 1.8GHz, have been shrunk by up to 60% compared to other Merom processors.

The companies' names have yet to be released, but the chip most likely will bring smaller and lighter notebooks that will compete in size and performance with the MacBook Air.

At the Intel Developer Forum last year, Intel talked about shrinking the size of chips by up to 60% for its next-generation Montevina mobile platform, which will include the new Penryn processors manufactured using the 45nm process. The small form-factor chips will be released shortly after the normal-size chips, due to ship by the middle of 2008.
