Dell Joins Growing List of Companies Accepting Bitcoins

Despite numerous highly publicized issues and a growing list of security concerns, Bitcoins are gaining more and more traction and are quickly becoming more widely accepted as forms of payment. In fact they are now so widely accepted and traded that states such as New York and California have enacted state level regulations for their use and trading.

It should then come as no surprise that major tech players and websites are amongst the first to join the Bitcoin craze.

Two of the country’s biggest names in e-commerce, Overstock.com and TigerDirect.com were at the fore front of the Bitcoin era, being amongst the first major online retailers to accept the digital currency as a purchase option. Earlier this week popular electronics e-retailer Newegg became one of the latest sites tech sites to join the fray.

Still we haven't seen many 'major' tech manufactures willing to take the leap, until now!

Dell on Friday announced consumer and small-business customers in the US can now use Bitcoin to make purchases on Dell.com. In addition to accepting Bitcoins, Dell has said they'll be running  a special Alienware promotion wherein customers can save 10 percent off a new Alienware system purchase (up to $150 limit) when checking out with bitcoin. Stay tuned to Dell.com/bitcoin for more information on this exciting offer.

Dell Bitcoin Checkout

Dell partnered with Coinbase, a trusted and secure third party payment processor, to make this possible. For users wanting to pay via Bitcoin the process was made fairly simple. When you’re ready to make a purchase, just add your items to your cart, fill out your shipping details and choose Bitcoin as your payment method. When you submit your order, you’ll be taken to Coinbase.com to complete your purchase.

Intel 2-in1 Devices The Ultimate Summertime Companion

Featuring all the power of a laptop with the added portability of a tablet, an
Intel 2 in 1 can make for the perfect summertime traveling companion.

Whether sitting on the beach, enjoying a quiet afternoon by the pool or just traveling to some of your favorite lunch spots, for us tech geeks staying connected and keeping productive is always a must. Sure you can do almost anything from those amazing smartphones these days, but having a larger screen sometimes is a must. Tablet are always great, but we don't always want to sacrifice productivity. For those wanting the best of both worlds I'd suggest checking out some of the newest #Intel2in1 devices.

On our days out of the office this summer we've been working from our new Dell Venue 11 Pro equipped with the Dell Tablet Keyboard. Like many of the Intel 2in1 devices on the market today this combo allows us to maintain portability with the standalone tablet as well as the ability to switch to a more productive platform with the full keyboard and extra battery.

So far we've managed to pack our Dell Venue 11 Pro with us on several day hikes and beach trips. The 10.8" full HD screen is super bright and offers a crisp viewing experience even when the sun is beating down. So far the 8MP camera has been great for snapping photos and since it is a Windows 8.1 device and offers a 'true Windows experience' we can use our favorite Adobe Suites for editing those photos.

When all that fun is over for the day and we are relaxing on the patio at our favorite brew spot, we snap on the Dell Tablet Keyboard, add on a wireless mouse and jump into work mode. This in our opinion is where the #2in1 platform really shines, you get the option of that true laptop-like experience. Since we have the ultrapowerful Intel Core i5 processor we can get multiple tasks done at the same time. Making it quicker and easier to get back to enjoying the fun in the sun.

How about you guys, how would you put your
Intel 2 in 1 to work this summertime? Share your ideas in a comment below!

Intel 2-in-1s: Getting The Best of A Tablet And Laptop All-In-One Device

The argument over which is better the laptop or the tablet is a never ending one. Each has their own merits with neither necessarily being a "winner," only a preference based on your specific needs. However, when choosing out latest geek gadget we asked ourselves, why choose between either? Why not get the best of both and get something that will offer the extremely convenient and portable features of a tablet, with all the powerful features a laptop has to offer?

When looking for the latest addition to our gadget family we took many factors into consideration. First, and foremost we had to think about what tasks we would need the device to handle on a daily basis and what we thought would be imperative for the device to perform. For example, for us a keyboard or the ability to use a keyboard is essential. Try typing out several long blog posts on a touchscreen and you will soon see why! We also needed something that offered a great deal of portability. I like to travel light and carry as little as possible.

Filling all of our needs has always been a bit tricky. Being tech junkies, of course we also have impeccable taste, so whatever devices we decide to grace the office with have to meet the highest standards. Given this, we decide to add our second #Intel2in1 device.

Meet our new Dell Venue 11 Pro! She came to us fully loaded and ready to tackle any of the geekiest tasks we could toss her way. Under the hood is an Intel Core i5 4210Y processor (3MB Cache, 1.5 GHz Dual-Core) processor, Windows 8.1, 4GBs of RAM and 128GB internal storage. To keep productivity up we added on Dell Tablet Keyboard with a built-in rechargeable battery that Dell says will increases our Dell Venue 11 Pro tablet's battery life by 50 percent.

As a stand alone tablet the Venue 11 Pro offers a 10.8 inch IPS Display with FHD (1920 x 1080) resolution with 10-pt capacitive touch. Which paired with Windows 8.1 gives you a fairly good tablet experience. Multi-touch is really response, the screen is bright and clear and videos really pop. Coupled with the keyboard and wireless Logitech mouse however, is where we really see her shine. The Core i5 and 4GBs of RAM means she purrs like a kitten, especially when compared to our other tablets and even our Samsung ATIV 2-in-1 that features an Intel Atom CPU. Multi-tasking with even some of the most demanding tasks we needed to accomplish was flawless.

Battery life was one area we were really concerned. We have not had the best of luck with out laptops nor our tablets. We are heavy users that like to have a full bright screen while running multiple programs. Both of which eat through battery life quickly. Both tablets and 2-in-1s should have great battery life. Tablets are built around a comparatively lower-powered processor, which typically gives tablets better battery life versus a 2-in-1 and considerable better life compared to laptops.

Here we were extremely surprised. Under fairly heavy usage our Core i7 based Samsung laptop gets a few hours at most battery time. Our tablets usually fair pretty well, but they aren't used nearly as much. When using the Dell Tablet Keyboard the battery on our Dell Venue 11 Pro was still running strong after 3+ hours, with 60-65% battery life left. That means we could have easily made it through a full work day on a single charge. Something we just can't do with most of our other devices.

The ability to seamlessly switch from a powerful tablet to an equally powerful, fully productive, laptop that really made us decide on an #Intel2in1 device. When on the go we can unplug and slim down with just the tablet, yet still have full access to all our Windows apps and content. Then when we need to ramp-up the power usage we can plug in our accessories like a keyboard, mouse or even external HDD and have more than enough juice to keep up with all our need.

For more details on the Dell Venue 11 Pro be sure to check back for our full review, which should be available shortly. If you need more details on selecting the best device for you checkout these suggestions from Intel!

Is Dell Losing Its Market Foothold?

The following is a guest post from David Fuller an article contributor at www.shoppingpreview.com where David joins other contributors in giving consumers the low-down on the most recent product developments in the information technology industry.

When small companies get left in the dust by their competitors, hardly anybody notices it. However, for large corporations who dominate their respective industries, falling behind gets a lot of attention. In the case of Dell, Inc. the attention is quite overwhelming.

The Rise of Dell Inc.

Dell, Inc. traces its beginnings to a dorm room headquarters in the University of Texas at Austin. Founded in 1984 by Michael Dell, it was first known as PCs Limited, a company selling IBM PC-compatible computer systems. Using a direct-to-consumer sales approach, the company earned $73 million in its initial year of operation, thanks to their proprietary “Turbo PC” computer which sold at $795 per unit.

Going Global

Three years later, Michael Dell decided to go global and started using “Dell Computer Corporation” as its official company name. As Dell had its initial public offering on June 22, 1988, its market capitalization ballooned to $80 million. Four years after the IPO, Dell became a Fortune 500 company, elevating its status as one of the top corporations worldwide.

Market Dominance

Its early years of global operations saw constant growth, maintaining their share of the PC market even as their competitors groaned under the strain of industry slowdowns. Up until 2001, Dell is the number one PC brand in terms of reliability and customer service ratings. Dell officially went online and started selling PCs on their website in 1996. The company eventually surpassed their closest competitor, Compaq in 1999 as the largest manufacturer of PCs globally. Although the Compaq and Hewlett-Packard merger of 2002 made Dell lose some ground in the PC market, the company regained its dominance a year later and held the top spot until 2006.

Diversification and Other Major Changes

Back in 2003, Dell Computer Corporation once again changed its name to Dell, Inc. This move signified the company’s strategy of diversifying into other products aside from PCs. A year later, Michael Dell handed over the reigns to Kevin Rollins as company CEO while staying as the corporation’s Chairman. Under Rollins leadership, Dell, Inc. started to distance itself from two major corporations which were instrumental to its stellar rise to PC market dominance – Intel and Microsoft.

Going Downhill

Dell, Inc. maintained dominance in the PC market for years, giving rise to the idea that the company would enjoy being on the top spot in the coming years. However, 2005 sales growth figures showed significant reduction with Dell, Inc. losing a quarter of its stock value. A year later, stock values went further down to 40% from the previous year.

The sudden downhill slide was largely attributed to a fast-maturing PC market. This comprised about 66% of Dell, Inc.’s total sales, which prompted market analysts to suggest that the company start considering market segments beyond PCs in order to generate a more diversified source of sales. Dell, Inc. began to realize that crucial business advantages such as efficient and cost-effective manufacturing processes, and up-selling, are losing its competitive edge.

Another stumbling block was Dell, Inc.’s low support for R&D initiatives. While its competitors were busy improving their processes and coming up with new products, Dell, Inc. showed paltry spending on R&D in comparison to its generated revenues. As the competition explored and profited from diversified sales strategies, the company got left behind since they practically had nothing to offer for the retail segments.

Moreover, Dell, Inc.’s once prized customer service became notorious for its poor satisfaction ratings and long waiting times. Despite efforts to shore up its customer service division, customer satisfaction levels remained dismal. The company image was further tarnished by a battery recall and several domestic investigations and foreign lawsuits.

Is Dell Losing Ground Again?

Based on Dell, Inc.’s most recent market sales data, it has once again posted losses as shares dropped and customers deferred PC purchases due to the Microsoft Windows 8 OS release. In addition, the popularity of mobile computing devices (e.g. iPad, etc.) and smartphones has reduced PC sales even further. For companies who have failed to gain a foothold in this particular market niche, last quarter sales figures look dismal to say the least. Furthermore, sales in the international PC market look dim as several crucial economies including China continue to experience slow growth. Unless Dell, Inc. comes up with something to revitalize its prospects, the outlook is generally grim.

New Windows Based Convertible Laptop-Tablet Hybrids Debuting At IFA 2012

The 2012 IFA consumer electronics show is under way in Berlin, Germany with several top companies showing up to showcase their latest and greatest tech hardware. We only have a few more months before the official launch of Windows 8 and Windows RT, so it was expected that many of the major PC players would have next-generation Windows equipped hardware on display. And so far they have not disappointed!

So far this year we've seen an incredible influx of Windows based devices as many manufactures are looking to cash in on not only the expected release of Windows 8 and Windows RT but the largely successful tablet market. We are seeing a strong push for Windows based tablets, mainly convertibles or hybrids whichever label you prefer to slap on the laptop-tablet combination. Asus, Dell, HP, Samsung, Sony, and Toshiba all had models on display.

Looking to build on the strong foundation that the ASUS Transformer and Transformer Prime have laid down Asus showcased a pair of Vivo Tab models. The first is running Windows 8 with a dual-core Intel Atom processor and the other is coupled with Windows RT and a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 chip. Not only do the two Asus offering offer a detachable keyboard dock but they also offer a pressure-sensitive stylus which would be perfect for note-taking and sketching. The Vivo Tab offers an 11.6-inch display while the Vivo Tab RT measures 10.1 inches. It’s also the thinnest and lightest of the bunch, measuring just 8.3mm thin and weighing 520g. (more details via Asus)

Dell’s offering comes int he form of the new XPS Duo 12 and XPS 10. The XPS 10 will run an ARM SoC and Windows RT. The XPS Duo 12 (which actually measures 12.5 inches on its display’s diagonal) will run Windows 8 and an unspecified Intel chip. Unlike most of the other models shown the Dell XPS Duo 12 is more of a clamshell laptop and a tablet in one. It offers a swiveling screen rather than the detachable keyboard. The XPS sticks with a more conventional design with the traditional tablet look and feel as well as a more traditional keyboard dock. (more details via Dell)

Dell XPS Duo 12

Looking to re-enter the tablet market after the much maligned HP Touchpad, HP has introduced the company's first Windows 8 hybrid the new HP Envy X2. The Envy X2 is powered by an Intel System-on-Chip (aka SOC) Atom based processor, features and 11.6-inch screen with 64GB of internal storage, microSD expansion, NFC support, and, of course, integrated Beats Audio. Its detachable keyboard also incorporates a giant powerpack, and it should comfortably provide all-day battery life. HP has also made sure that the dock won’t accidentally dislodge by building in a mechanical latch to supplement a pair of strong magnets. (more details via HP)

HP Envy X2

Samsung introduced the new Windows RT based ATIV Tab  which features a 10.1-inch display, 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 2 GB RAM, either 32 or 64 GBs of internal storage and a microSD slot for expansion. For those looking for the full Windows 8 experience as well as the option of a keyboard Samsung also revealed the Samsung ATIV SmartPC and the ATIV SmartPC Pro. Both feature an 11.6-inch HD display, S Pen integration, and a 60-day free trial of Microsoft Office, but the Pro packs a much more powerful platform. While the SmartPC boasts a 1366-by-768 display, 2GB of RAM, and a next-gen Intel Atom processor, the SmartPC Pro offers up a 1920-by-1080 display, 4GB of RAM, and an Intel Core i5 chip. (more details via Samsung)

Sony has opted to take its own approach the a "hybrid" laptop tablet combo with a slider type device it is calling the Sony Vaio Duo 11. You can either use it as a tablet or slide back the display up at an angle locking it in place to make use of the hidden keys. Sony has decided to pack the Vaio Duo with tons of fire power giving consumers  the choice of processor with options ranging from a Core i3 all the way up to an i7, up to 256GB of SSD storage, 1080P displays, NFC, GPS, HD-ready cameras, and stylus input. (more details via Sony)

Toshiba’s taking a similar approaching with the Satellite U920T slider. It’s matching the XPS Duo with a 12.5-inch screen, and options will include Core i3 or i5 processors and SSD storage up to 256GB. You’ll also get an HDMI port and SD card expansion with the U920T.

Conclusions

With all these devices coming down the line one thing is for certain, consumers are going to have a ton of choices and some tough decisions to make. I'm personally not a big fan of Windows 8 on a desktop, but some of these convertible tablets look amazing. In fact they are just what I've been looking for for the past couple of years. You get the portability and ease of use of a tablet along with the productivity of a full fledged laptop.

It looks like I might have to pony up some of that hard earned cash and join the portable revolution!

Dell Teasing New Ultra Thin Sandy Bridge Laptop

Thin is in, at least Dell hopes so. The company has been teasing a new ultra-thin laptop to replace the failed Adamo line which was dumped earlier this year.

Details are pretty scares with Dell only giving us a product name, Dell XPS 15z, and that they will be built around the the latest Intel "Sandy Bridge" Core i5 and Core i7 processors.

The video shows off a front facing camera, two USB 3.0 ports, as well as what looks like a slot-load optical drive. Reports indicate the laptop will feature a 15.6-inch screen size yet there is no word on which gpu we can expect to see powering the graphics. Pricing is reported to be in the $1000 neighborhood.

More photos have been posted on Dell's global Facebook page and CEO Micheal Dell has been tweeting details here and there.

It will be interesting to see how well Dell does with this new "thin" line. The Adamo line garnered a ton of  attention as a contender against the MacBook Air but interest quickly dissipated.

So Long Dell Adamo We Barely Knew You

Dell's expensive MacBook Air Rival the Dell Adamo line has sang its last hurrah. According to CNet the company has officially discontinued the product line moving the last few new Adamos out the door at steep discounts.

First introduced back in 2009 the Dell Adamo was immediately tagged as a competitor to the new MacBook Air. While the Adamo matched the MackBook Air not only in styling and specifications it unfortunately matched the MBA in price as well, which might have ultimately led to its demise. When initially introduced the sleek little laptops fetched a $2000 price tag putting them well out of reach for most consumers and in many peoples eyes far to pricey for a Dell.

Dell has repeatedly slashed prices over the last several months finally cutting the price on the 13-inch Adamo down to as low as $799. Dell had to downgrade a few components in order to slash the additional 200 bones from the previous $999 price tag and initial price of $1099.

The laptops are still listed on the Dell site, however there is no pricing information and it is noted that they might not be available in your area.  As a final note, refurbished 13-inch Adamos are still available at low prices.

NVIDIA Settles In Laptop GPU Class Action Lawsuit

Considering the time frame involved, and the lack of recent publicity many of you out there may have long forgotten about the issue by now, but anyone that was hit by those defective NVIDIA GPUs back in 2008 will want to take notice.

NVIDIA has finally reached a settlement in the class action lawsuit that was the result of hundreds of thousands of laptop users being afflicted with defective GPUs. That means that anyone with an affected Apple, Dell or HP laptop will be eligible for some form of compensation. In the case of Apple and Dell laptops, that includes a replacement of the GPU or MCP, while users of an affected HP laptop will actually get a full replacement laptop "similar in kind and value." Anyone that has already paid to have their laptop repaired due to the GPU issue is also entitled to a full reimbursement provided they have the necessary documentation for the repairs.

A list of the models affected can be found here. You can also click here to see if your specific model is affected by this settlement. For full details checkout the NVIDIA Settlement home page.

Dell Updates Streak Pre-Sale Details

Update: According to Computer World, the information quoted below from the Dell site is wrong and was accidentally posted. Dell spokesperson Matt Parretta told Computer World's Matt Hamblen, "It was a mistake, and we took that information down this morning. I can say definitely that the Dell Streak won't go on sale in July."

It looks like its anyone's guess as to when the Streak will actually be released!

Last week we mentioned that Dell was offering very few details about it ongoing pre-sale of the new Dell Streak Tablet. Today the company finally outed the information that most customers had been begging for!

According to Dell:
Pre-sale registrants get first access to pre-order the Dell Streak though Dell.com on July 27 for $299.99 with new two-year eligible AT&T service contract†, and $549.99 without. Those who sign up during the pre-sale signup will also receive a free second-day shipping upgrade as well as a coupon for a Plantronics Bluetooth earpiece for 99 cents. Clicking on the link below will take you directly to the pre-sale site.

Registering sometime between July 20 - 27 will sign you up for a spot to pre-order a Dell Streak. On June 27, customers who register will receive an e-mail from Dell that will contain a unique purchase link. That e-mail will also contain a coupon code that will allow you to buy the Plantronics Bluetooth headset for 99 cents. If you do not use that purchase code before July 28, you will lose your priority order status and will have to place your order with the general public when it will be available for order by all US customers.
For those of you looking for more details here's the Dell Streak product page.

Dell is also confirming that the Dell Aero is making its way to US customers. The phone is expected to be available for order Aug. 9 at Dell.com/mobile or from AT&T for $99.99 with new AT&T two-year contract†, and $299.99 without. At this time AT&T has very few details on their product page but you can sign-up for an email alert as soon as the Dell Aero is available.

Dell Offers Very Few Dell Streak Pre-Sale Details

Dell may have announced the Streak pre-sale for US customers this week however its what the company isn't saying that is speaking more loudly that what it is.

Dell kicked off the pre-sale opportunity July 20 for those eager customers that just can't wait to get their hands on the new 5" tablet (err smarthpone?). The company has said that pre-sale registrants will get the first access to pre-order the Dell Streak through Dell.com. What the company has failed to say is exactly when the phone will be available, at what price, through what carriers and whether or not there will be an option for unlocked devices.

Speculation has the Streak showing up as an AT&T phone as early as next Monday. The Dell site simply says "available for purchase in late July" with no mention of a carrier. These reports seem the most likely as phone will utilize the GSM bands that are currently only offered by AT&T and T-Mobile. Add to that the fact sites like PC Mag have already outed the phone as an AT&T device and its seems reasonable.

Hardware-wise, the Dell Streak features the following:
  • A sharp 5-inch capacitive multi-touch WVGA (800x480) display for a great full-screen experience watching video or browsing the web
  • Fast 1GHz Snapdragon ARM-based mobile processor from Qualcomm
  • 5 MP autofocus camera with dual LED flash that offers easy point & shoot capability and quick uploads to YouTube, Flickr, Facebook and more
  • VGA front-facing camera enables video chat functionality down the road
  • A user-removable (and replaceable) battery
  • A 3.5mm headphone jack means many of you can use the Dell Streak as the music source (and more) in your car
  • Integrated 3G + Wi-Fi (802.11b/g) + Bluetooth 2.1 (think headsets, external keyboards, stereo headsets, etc.)
  • UMTS / GPRS / EDGE class 12 GSM radio with link speeds of HSDPA 7.2 Mbps / HSUPA
  • A user-accessible Micro SD slot expandable up to 32GB. That means you can store  lots of movies, music, photos or other kinds of files.
On the software side, here's what you can expect:
  • A customized multi-touch version of the Google Android operating system that features Dell user interface enhancements
  • Access to over 38,000+ apps via the Android Marketplace
  • Microsoft Exchange connectivity and integration through TouchDown
  • Google Voice support
  • Integrated Google Maps with voice-activated search, turn-by-turn navigation, street and satellite views
  • Quick access to activity streams via integrated social network app widgets like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube

From the early reviews and pictures the Dell Streak looks intriguing. I see a lot of concerns over the overall size and shape, with more than one review stating that its to big to be a great smarthphone and too small to be a great tablet. Price concerns are another big area of concern. If the phone is priced to high it will price itself out of the competition so I guess time will tell.

Your Replacement Dell PowerEdge Motherboard May Have Malware

Dell has issued a warning to all of the business consumers that several of the companies replacement motherboards for their PowerEdge servers could potentially be infected with malware.

Apparently the issue does not affect any Dell PowerEdge servers shipped directly from Dell's factories rather it's limited to a small number of the replacement motherboards which were sent via Dell’s service and replacement process for four server models: PowerEdge R310, PowerEdge R410, PowerEdge R510 and PowerEdge T410.

Dell's Matt McGinnis has posted more details on the Dell Support forum thread here with many more details being posted on this post. The company promises it will continue to update this main server forum thread. Beyond the discussion forum, concerned customers are urged to contact Dell's server support team.

The malware has been identified as the W32.Spybot worm and was discovered in flash storage on the motherboard during Dell testing. The malware does not reside in the firmware as previously thought. Dell is assuring consumers that all industry-standard antivirus programs on the market today have the ability to identify and prevent the code from infecting the customer’s operating system which is limited to Windows based operating systems only.

AT&T's Cup Runneth Over With Smartphones

AT&T may have exclusivity to sale the iPhone, which is one of the hottest phones on the market, but that's not keeping the company from adding even more hot phones to their line-up.

Last month the company made the move to Google's Android platform when they added the Motorola Backflip, the companies first Android powered device. Then they continued adding to an already packed line-up when earlier this month they added four new smartphones, the Pantech Link and Pursuit as well as the Samsung Sunburst and Strive.

This week the company made slightly bolder moved when they added the Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus and their second Android-based smartphone the Dell Aero. Add to that the announcement from Google that they have released a 3G ready Nexus One that is compatible with AT&T's network and it looks like AT&T customers might have a tough decision to make when it comes to buying that next phone.

AT&T To Sell 5 Android Phones This Year

Reuters is reporting that AT&T plans to sell as many as 5 Anrdoid based smartphones in the first half of 2010.

AT&T's head of consumer services, Ralph de la Vega, said Wednesday that AT&T plans to sell five Android phones from Dell, HTC and Motorola. De la Vega was speaking at an event Wednesday ahead of the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Each of the five phones AT&T plans to offer will be available exclusively from the carrier, raising the question as to what new phones they might be bringing along.

Dell has already confimed plans to offer an Android-based Mini 3 through AT&T. Making their Mini 3 one of the first Android-based smartphones to run on AT&T's 3G network. There are currently about 20 Android based phones on the market, including ones made by Motorola and HTC and Google Inc.'s new Nexus One, which was announced Tuesday.

Alongside the announcement to joi the Droid market AT&T announced 'Apps to All', a new agreement with Qualcomm to standardize apps development by adopting BREW Mobile Platform.

Executives outlined details including:
  • New devices that will give customers the most robust choices of major operating systems (OS), including Android™, in the U.S.
  • A goal to offer all major smartphone OS app stores
  • An agreement with Qualcomm to standardize apps development for mid-range Quick Messaging Devices using BREW Mobile Platform. These devices are used by millions of customers who historically have not had the same convenient access as smartphone customers to the market’s hottest apps
  • A new AT&T SDK (software developer kit) to help developers immediately begin to develop apps for these devices
  • A significantly enhanced developer program and new relationships with global carriers that are intended to make it easier for developers to distribute apps in markets outside the U.S.
  • Future initiatives to enable developers to create more apps for AT&T’s U-verse TV, emerging consumer electronics devices, and businesses
  • A new AT&T Virtual Innovation Lab and two new Innovation Centers, which will help developers and spur apps development
“Applications help consumers realize the full value and benefits of mobile broadband networks, services and devices,” said Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. “Today some AT&T customers can take advantage of more than 100,000 apps – but only if they have the right handset. Our goal is to bring more apps to millions more of our customers who want convenient access to the market’s hottest apps. At the same time, in the future, we plan to go well beyond mobile devices to spur apps development.”

Dell's Sexy New Super Slim Vostro V13

dell logoMeasuring in at 0.65 inches thick Dell's new Vostro V13 is super slim and super sleek and I want one now! With a starting price of only $449 this super-thin laptop from Dell is definitely an eye catcher and a like win for Dell.

The new Vostro V13 comes with options for either a 1.2GHz Celeron, 1.3GHz Core 2 Duo or 1.4GHz Core 2 Solo with integrated Intel X4500MHD graphics, a 13.3-inch screen, up to 320GB of hard drive storage and up to 4GB of DDR3 RAM. For operating systems you get your choice of Ubuntu Linux version 9.04 for the base package or Windows 7 Home Premium, Business or Professional for the upgraded models.

As with most ultra thin laptops there is no option for an optical drive, users instead can opt for an external drive or simply do without. Its powered by a six-cell lithium-ion battery with a purported five-hour run time on a single charge.

One key note is the battery is integrated directly into the case, much like unibody Mac notebooks. Which means that the battery will not be user serviceable so should you ever need to replace the battery, you'll have to get your machine serviced via Dell or an authorized tech.

For now the V13 is targeted at small and medium businesses, initially launching on the Dell Small Business Site. Given the sleek design and ultra portability its likely the average consumer will be intrigued by the Vostro V13 as well.

All I have to say is after looking at the price and sizes of the V13 I want one. The 13" screen offers plenty of viewable space and the CPU, RAM and HDD options are exactly in-line with what I'd want from my next laptop. With the light weight of only 3.5 pounds and only 0.65 inches thick it should be perfect for totting around just about anywhere. It would be a perfect match for this blogger while he's on the go!
