Roku to Offer New $50 Entry-Level Streaming Device For $25 On Black Friday

For those of you out there that are looking to jump into the video steaming game and aren't swayed by the low cost of the Google Chromecast and Amazon's Fire devices, Roku may have just announced a product that is right for you. Today, the hardware maker revealed a low-cost version of its Roku player, the Roku SE, which will be affordably priced at $49.99 and heavily discounted to $25 for Black Friday.

As an entry level device we won't see all of the same features you see packed into the Roku 4 or other similar models that are currently available (or $25 what'd you really expect?). The Roku SE will however pack plenty of punch for most users with full WiFi support and streaming capabilities for up to 1080p video streaming (not 4K obviously). We will also see both HDMI and analog connections for support for older TVs as well as the  newly released Roku OS 7 operating system, which will provide access to Roku’s nearly 3,000 streaming channels offering 300,000 movies and TV episodes.

The Roku SE is also compatible with the Roku Mobile App for iOS or Android giving you access to key features such as Roku Search, Roku Feed, Remote Control, Play on Roku and more from your phone. The SE will also support casting content from a mobile device to the TV via specific streaming channels or the Roku Mobile App.

What you won’t see are features like an Ethernet port, voice search or the remote finder function and while Roku didn’t publish the detailed specs for the new device, it’s likely to have downgraded internals to help keep the cost low.So don't expect a powerhouse here!

Roku has said this special edition Roku player will be available in the U.S. for a limited-time only during Black Friday weekend online and at select national retailers starting 11/26. So you might want to snatch yours up quickly! If you'd like more details they can be found via the Roku SE product page.

How To: Use Price Matching to Get The Best Black Friday and Cyber Monday Deals

Black Friday and Cyber Monday often offer customers some incredible deals at incredible prices. However, it often involves a lot of shopping around and hunting for products that are in stock or available. In order to attract more online shoppers and get customers through the door more stores are upping the ante this year and are offering more lenient price matching policies and a few have started price matching to more stores.

Traditionally brick and mortar stores have been reluctant to price match to online e-tailers and more particularly online giants like Amazon. In the past most stores limited price matching to ads or websites from traditional retailers and would place heavy restrictions on price matching to anything online. This year Walmart is taking an aggressive pricing policy and reversing that trend. Earlier this month they announced they'd now price match Amazon.com and a handful of other online retailers.

With these new changes this year using price matching may just be the best bet and offer you the best deals! In order to get those deals though you'll need to know what you are doing and know exactly how to go about it! Here are a few tips that should help insure your price matching is a success:

Finding The Best Prices: Try using price comparison websites like NexTag.com or even Google Shopping to find the best buys and gather your information on products and pricing. Another great source is social media sites. Follow your favorite stores to stay up to date on coupons and sales. These kinds of announcements usually happen first on social media. Watch for hashtags like #BlackFriday and #CyberMonday for special deals from your favorite brands.

Do Your Store Research: Once you've found a deal you want and efore going in-store or calling customer service double check the store's price matching policy. All stores have them detailed on their website, though some may be a bit confusing. Walmart has their 'Ad Match' and 'Online Price Matching Policies'. The later explains exactly which websites they'll match prices to and offers clear stipulations as to the limitations.

Gather Your Information: Most stores require printed copies of competitor ads or print outs of the webpage with clear product information and pricing. Do not go in-store unprepared to show this! In some cases they may be nice and allow you to show them the website. However, they generally don't have time!

Verify Your Product Information: Before you head in-store make sure you verify that the item you want to buy is A) The same product and model numbers B)  Not part of a Clearance, Closeout, Liquidation, Special Hour/Flash/Limited Quantity offers C) In-stock at the online retailer’s website at the time the request.

Making Your Purchase: Once you are ready to head in-store before requesting your price match make sure you pick-up your item, re-verify the details from above and head to the cashier with your selection. You need to have all your information ready so that you can request the price match right at the register with your product in hand.

What If They Won't Price Match?: Be polite but be authoritative just try not to be overly assertive or pushy. If the store has a question or there is an issue with making the price match remember that Management has the final decision for matching an online price. If you are friendly most the time they are willing to work with you and will be more receptive to you. If they absolutely refuse, try going up the food chain to another manager. If they still refuse the price match then you may want to try another time or another store.

Once The Purchase Is Made: Don't forget the bargain hunting doesn't end once your purchase had been made. Many stores offer policies that extend for days or weeks after you've made your purchase. Don't be afraid to go back to the stores and ask for them to match a better price at a later date.

With these quick tips along with a little leg work you should have a fairly easy Black Friday and Cyber Monday price matching experience. Just remember patience is going to be key and will certainly help out when you are in-store! Do you have any tips to help make pricing matching easier? Share your ideas with fellow shoppers in a comment below!

WSJ Christmas Sale Tracker Helps You Get The Best Deals On Black Friday

Black Friday will soon be upon us, and wile most of us geeks will rely heavily upon our favorite sites and apps to ensure we are getting the best of the best deals out there. A new tool from The Wall Street Journal, of all places, will offer a new way at tracking deals and seeing what stores are offering the best pricing.

As we well know stores adjust their holiday pricing on many items, especially online shops,  at any given moment. This is where the WSJ Christmas Sale Tracker comes in. It will allow you’ll to be able to see when and where to get the best deals on the items tacked. It will also offer a chart showing recent pricing trend which will help give consumers clues about which chains are competing most aggressively for sales.

According to the WSJ the tracker will collect prices once an hour from Nov. 1 through Dec. 31 to determine the best times to buy those products, how early retailers offer their best deals and how quickly rivals match lower offers. The Christmas Sale Tracker will also track availability of popular items and show when they are out of stock or unavailable, an important indicator to watch during the holiday season, when retailers can lower prices on a small selection of sought-after goods to draw shoppers to their websites.

Unfortunately the tracker will only monitor a handful of the 'hottest' holiday items, so we can't rely on it for all of our Black Friday needs. But it should help provide a snap shot of which stores we may find the best deals at. For tracking other Black Friday sales we recommend visiting a few of our geeky favorites like: SlickDeals Black Friday Forum, DealNews, or FatWallet.com. For those looking for apps we suggest using the following: Sazze Inc Black Friday Ads (also on iTunes) or the FatWallet Black Friday App (also on iTunes).

Holiday Shopping Made Easier With Mobile Apps

We are all aware that holiday shopping can be a daunting task. Consumers have to fight long lines, out of stock items and other shoppers for the chance to get our hands on the best deals. With the influx of smartphone, and tablets to the mix retailers are adding in an array of digital offerings that might help alleviate the hardships faced by the tech savy holiday shopper.

Several major retailers including Wal-Mart, Toys R Us, Brookstone, Kmart, J.C. Penney and the Disney Stores have rolled out new apps geared specifically for holiday shoppers.

The new mobile based applications have grown in sophistication as retailers strive to give today's shopper more choices. No longer do tech wielding shoppers just want brief product information and pricing. They want to compare prices, receive discount offers, buy products and even get in-store maps through their handheld devices. According to a National Retail Federation/BIGresearch survey more than half of all shops this year own smartphones and plan to use them during holiday shopping. And 71% of tablet owners have said they will use their devices to tackle holiday tasks.

To better prepare for the tech-savvy holiday shopper, half of retailers significantly invested in mobile-optimized websites, while one in five chose to create tablet specific apps.

Wal-Mart's newest offering includes an enhanced iPhone app that allows users to add shopping list items by speaking, typing or scanning bar codes. It also provides the price, local store availability and, in select markets, aisle location of those items.

For many, these devices are "indispensable tools," says Mike Gatti, executive director of the NRF's marketing division. "They allow you to shop wherever and whenever you want."

Checkout these great apps for your 2011 holiday shopping season:

How to Score Hot Gadgets for Cheap on Black Friday

The following is a guest post from Tarrah a blogger who helps write for dealio.com, a website dedicated to helping people find the best deals online.

Each year, before the Black Friday kickoff to the holiday shopping season even rolls around, retailers and shoppers alike wait with baited breath to see what the hottest “must have” gadgets will be. Retailers hope for large profits on high dollar items while shoppers anticipate getting those high dollar items at rock bottom prices. Although there’s really no way of knowing what the biggest sellers of the season will be until the sales actually get under way, the current market is usually a very good indicator of what will be hot - or not.  For 2010, current market trends show that the most popular items this holiday season are likely to be Apple products, Sony’s new gaming console and the Amazon Kindle 3G eBook Reader.

  • Tablet PCs, like The Apple iPad look to be wildly popular among consumers this holiday season. The iPad has dominated the tablet PC sales so far, but will it hold of the other tablets this season?
  • Smartphones are another potentially hot item this season. Android phones such as the Droid and HTC Hero continue to take market share away from the iPhone, but at 50 Million sold, an “iPhone killer” has still yet to be seen.
  • Speaking of Apple, the new iPod touch is another item to watch for. It combines all the technology of a regular iPod with advanced features like a gaming center, video chat and video recording plus editing.
  • The Amazon Kindle 3G is an eBook reader that can hold over three thousand eBooks. Unlike previous Kindle models, the 3G offers free 3G web browsing, which can be accessed at any Wi-Fi location.
  • Sony's new gaming platform will be available just in time for Christmas. The PS3 Move combines the Nintendo Wii with Microsoft Kinect and includes a camera that records all your movements in 3D. The camera is integrated with a motion-sensitive controller so all the game moves can be re-enacted again and again.

Because of their popularity among shoppers, getting the best deal on these items means planning your shopping strategy ahead of time. Search as many “leaked” Black Friday sales ads as you can find. These ads will tell you which merchants will be offering these items so you’ll know where to go first, whether you do your Black Friday shopping online or in person. Remember to take advantage of any coupons or shipping offers to make great deal even better. If you find that a merchant has sold out of a particular item on your list before you get there, ask if they offer a rain checks. These will allow you to purchase the item at the advertised price long after the sale has ended. If you have no luck with rain checks, try searching for the item on eBay. Some eBay sellers will purchase popular items in bulk and sell them for slight profit. Even at the inflated reseller prices, you still have a chance of getting the item well below retail cost. You can also search your local classified ads for people selling these items. Some choose to do their reselling this way instead of auctioning the items so you may still be able to land a deal. If all else fails, you might have to wait until after Christmas to purchase that hot item on your list. Although this isn’t the ideal situation, if you combine sale prices with coupons and other promotions, you may still be able to get the item at very near the Black Friday sale price long after Black Friday has come and gone. >

Oh, and if standing in line at 4:00 am for low prices isn't your thing, then consider shopping on Cyber Monday.

'Black Friday', Not So Black After All

Black Friday is meant to be the one day a year that most retailers can finally get their number into the "black", however it appears as though this year might not have been as profitable as most had hoped.

The early numbers indicate sales increased slightly over last year but the numbers weren't as good as most companies wished for. According to the National Retail Federation roughly 195 million consumers waded through heavy traffic to shop in stores and online over the Black Friday weekend. Those numbers are nearly 23million from the 172 million last year. But in a reversal average spending dropped to $343.31 per person from $372.57 a year ago.

The increase in traffic did however lead to an overall increase in sales, just not as much as most had expected. ShopperTrak, which measures traffic and sales in 500,000 locations across the country, said it estimated Black Friday in-store sales at $10.66 billion, versus $10.606 billion on Black Friday 2008, an increase of just 0.5 percent.

Overall sales for the four-day weekend totaled $41.2 billion, up marginally from $41 billion last year, the NRF estimated. The trade group bases its figures on a survey, conducted Thursday through Saturday, of roughly 5,000 consumers and includes a projection for Sunday.

“Shoppers proved this weekend that they were willing to open their wallets for a bargain, heading out to take advantage of great deals on less expensive items like toys, small appliances and winter clothes,” said Tracy Mullin, NRF President and CEO. “While retailers are encouraged by the number of Americans who shopped over Black Friday weekend, they know they have their work cut out for them to keep people coming back through Christmas. Shoppers can continue to expect retailers to focus on low prices and bargains through the end of December.”

The lower than expect spending levels showed that most consumers in this tight economy are being more bargain conscious leaving the high ticket items on the shelves and reach for more discretionary items.

According to the survey, nearly one-third (32.2%) of shoppers purchased toys, an increase of 12.9 percent from last year. Additionally, more people purchased sporting goods (12.6% vs. 11.4% last year), personal care or beauty items (22.4% vs. 19.0%) and gift cards (21.2% vs. 18.7%).

In a surprising reversal of trends this year more shopper chose to visit retail stores or department stores over online shopping. The favorite amongst shoppers being department stores, with nearly half (49.4%) of holiday shoppers visiting at least one, a 12.9% increase from last year. Experian Hitwise reported that compared to a year ago traffic to retail web sites was down 9%, though traffic to Black Friday-themed web sites was up 9% compared to last year.

ComScore reported Black Friday saw $595 million in online sales, making it the second heaviest online spending day to date in 2009 and representing an 11-percent increase versus Black Friday 2008.

For the second straight year Amazon.com was the most visited Web site on Black Friday receiving 13.55% of top retail traffic in the U.S., followed by Wal-Mart with 11.18%, Target with 5.65%, Best Buy with 4.62%, and Sears with 2.95%.

As for Black Friday themed sites, comScore studied eight Black Friday deal sites for the five days ending Black Friday (Nov. 23-27) compared to the corresponding days last year, finding that BFads.net led the pack with 3.9 million unique visitors, up 4 percent versus last year. BlackFriday.info followed with 3.5 million visitors, while Black-Friday.net (up 136 percent to 2.3 million visitors) showed the fastest growth.

With the weekend nearly over, and most of the BF deals behind us its time to look towards Cyber Monday.

According to a BIGresearch survey funded by the NRF, 96.5 million Americans plan to shop on Cyber Monday this year, up from 85 million in 2008. About 87.1 percent of retailers plan to hold special Cyber Monday sales, an increase from 83.7 percent last year.

Several sites including, BestBuy.com, Newegg.com and Walmart.com posted their Cyber Monday deals early. With several other sites starting the sales as early as midnight on Sunday. A few great place to track the best Cyber Monday deals include Cybermonday.com, Cybermonday.fm and Dealighted.com.

Best Buy Black Friday 2009 DoorBusters

Best Buy has officially posted their door buster deals for Black Friday 2009. Some of these are pretty darn good deals, one of which is an HP laptop for under $200!! All door buster deals will require a ticket which means you will more than likely have to stand in line and I almost guarantee that means getting there very early!

Below is a list of a few of the deals Best Buy is offering for Black Friday 2009, a full list can be found by clicking here and you can view the full weekly add by clicking here.

Samsung LN46B640 46" LCD HDTV - $999 this is currently on-sale for $1199 so at $999 you are saving well over $200

HP G60-507DX Laptop with Intel Celeron 900 Processor - $197 they list it at $549 but the specs are almost identical to the $249 Acer they sold two weeks ago. This comes with a Celly 900, 2gigs of DDR2, a 160GB HDD and Windows 7.

Sony VAIO VGN-NW235F/W Laptop $399 - the details aren't listed on the Best Buy site but the specs listed from Sony are as follows, Intel Pentium T4300 (2.10GHz) Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, 15.5" widescreen LCD, 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD, DVD burning, webcam

Dynex DX-L321-10A 32" LCD HDTV - $299 - this product is already listed on BestBuy.com and on-sale at that price but you have to pay shipping. IMO that's a fair trade-off for not standing inline, so I'd buy it online if you are planning on getting it.

Samsung UN46B6000VF 46" LED-LCD HDTV - $1,599 - this isn't a bad deal but its only $150 below current cost at several online retailers and can be had cheaper at Abe's Of Maine -$1588.18

Garmin nüvi 205W - $99.99 - they list it at $199, however most sites like Newegg have it for $135

Doorbuster FAQs

What are the store hours?
  • BestBuy.com is open 24/7/365.
  • All retail stores will be closed for Thanksgiving.
  • Stores will open at 5 a.m. on Friday, November 27, and close at 10 p.m.
  • Stores will open at 9 a.m. on Saturday, November 28, and close at 10 p.m.
  • Additional store hours can be found in our Store Locator.

What time will tickets be handed out to customers?

  • Each store will decide when to hand out tickets in the two hours before store opening. Stores base their decisions on multiple factors, including the length of the line, the weather, and store personnel levels.
  • Tickets will be handed out until they are gone. Lines tend to form early, and Best Buy is unable to guarantee that all customers will receive a ticket.

How will tickets be provided prior to store opening?

  • A line of customers will form outside of Best Buy stores and tickets will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • In most cases tickets will be handed out by store personnel prior to store opening.
  • Best Buy reserves the right to refuse service or to provide a ticket to anyone it deems necessary. Best Buy will cancel ticketing and line formation if customer participation is deemed unlawful by local law enforcement agencies.

How many tickets can a single customer get?

  • Each customer is eligible to receive one ticket per applicable item. If a customer wants to purchase 10 different items, then he or she is eligible to receive one ticket (if applicable) for each of those 10 items.
  • All customers in line are eligible to receive a ticket based on ticket availability. Customers are not required to be an adult (age 18 or older) in order to receive a ticket.

By what time does a customer have to redeem the ticket?

  • Each ticket includes a time deadline for when it must be redeemed.

Why is it necessary to have a ticket to purchase select products?

  • Ticketing will help to ensure the safety of both Best Buy customers and employees when the stores open. Tickets also help to ensure that those customers who arrive first can purchase the products they want.

What are doorbusters?

  • Doorbuster products are front-cover limited-quantity items on the Thanksgiving Day advertisement in your local newspaper. If you do not receive a copy of the advertisement, it can viewed in the Weekly Ad section of BestBuy.com.

What products require tickets?

  • Select front-cover and other limited-quantity items from our Thanksgiving Day advertisement will require tickets.
  • The ticket will grant the customer the ability to buy the item for a limited time.

What if I previously purchased a product at Best Buy and the price is now lower in your Friday advertisement, TV ads or on BestBuy.com? What if I find a lower price available at a Best Buy competitor on Friday?

What is Best Buy's holiday gift return and exchange policy?

Are there any errors in the Thanksgiving day ad?

  • Yes. On page 12 of the November 27th - 28th ad insert we advertised our store hours as open from 9am to 11pm on Saturday, November 28th. Our store hours are 9am to 10pm on Saturday, November 28th. We apologize for any confusion or inconvenience this may have caused.

Black Friday 2009

That's right folks Black Friday 2009 is coming up and ad leaks are already hitting the net. With our slumping economy it appears as though many big retailers like Wal-Mart, Sears and Best-Buy are starting their Black Friday sales early an the ads are being leaked even earlier than years past (or maybe it just seems that way).

Black Friday, or the Friday after Thanksgiving, used to be considered the beginning of the holiday shopping season, the time of year when many retailers see their red ink turn to black, as year end sales push them into profitability. Over the past few years however the luster of Black Friday has begun to tarnish.

The drop comes largely in part to the fact that the economy has been down but add to that the lack of "stellar" deals or influx of better overall deals on other days and Black Friday just has had the appeal. It appears as though Black Friday 2009 might be making a move to turn that around. The release of Windows 7 has made a big mark on the market and it should help push some stellar PC deals. Drops this year in gaming console prices, and some predicted deals in the arena should also help push customers through the door.

So lets get the deal hunting started. Here are a few sites you should bookmark, if you haven't already, and keep track of the deals as they come in.

One of the hotest leaked deals so far comes not on Black Friday but rather a couple weeks earlier. Walmart has decided to start the holiday shipping season on Saturday, November 7. At that time you'll be able to pick up the Arcade Xbox 360 system for $200—the normal price—but for that day the system will come with a $100 gift card. If you are a truly hard core gamer you can put that $100 card towards a shiny new PlayStation 3 which would allow you to pick up an Arcade 360, and a 120GB PlayStation 3, for a mere $400.

If gaming isn't your thing there are several more nicely priced deals such as a Blu-ray player for $150, or a $300 HP G60-519WM laptop. As with several other Walmart laptop deals this looks like it is built exclusively for Walmart by HP. This particular model packs a 15.6-inch WXGA display, along with previously rumored specs including a 2.2GHz Celeron 900 processor, 3GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, a LightScribe DVD burner, and some basic Intel GMA 4500M integrated graphics -- not to mention Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit edition for an OS.

As more information and details begin to roll in I'll be adding more links and updates soon, so be sure to check back often.

Black Friday Downs Some Online Retailers

Servers for online retailers hit with a flood of traffic for Black Friday couldn't hadn't the traffic causing slow downs and major outages.

According to the Associated Press, Sears.com, one of the biggest retailers hit with outages, was offline for two hours on Friday. Saksfifthavenue.com, Lowes.com, Victoriassecret.com, Amazon.com and many others were overwhelmed with internet traffic from users trying to get cheap black Friday deals.

Keynote Systems said Friday of the 30 sites it tracks, 15 percent had noticeable performance problems. The problems were mostly in the sites' shopping cart and checkout systems, not the catalog functions. "Every year, we see a handful of Web sites that aren't ready for the holiday rush. The problems are in the shopping cart experience, where you cannot complete a purchase," said Shawn White, director of external operations for mobile and Internet testing at Keynote.

Apple Black Friday Sales Begin

Black Friday might be an American phenomenon but not for Apple, who is already celebrating in the parts of the world were its already Friday. The Apple Australia and New Zealand stores are already reporting Black Friday deals with discounts on iMac and MacBook computers range from $50 to $100.

They are also seeing discounts on monitors, iPod Nanos, Touch and Classics and accessories for just about everything.

Black Friday won't officially hit here in the States for another 7hrs or so but we should expect the same types of deals from the US Apple Store.

In the mean time we already know that MacMall, Apple's largest authorized dealer, is having a three day sale that has actually already begun and will end on Black Friday at 11:59 PM. The sale pretty much covers all of Apple computers, including MacBooks, iMacs, MacBook Airs, Mac Minis and Mac Pros.

You'll find deals like the 13.3" MacBook Air with a 1.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM and an 80GB Hard Drive for $1,149 and the 15.4" MacBook Pro featuring the Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz, 2GB Memory and a 120GB Hard Drive for $1,299, which is $200 off its normal retail value.
