MySpace Getting An Overhaul, Will It Help?

The much maligned MySpace website is getting a face lift thanks to its new owners. A recently posted teaser video found at New.myspace.com shows off some of the sites new features including what looks to be a new photo stream similar in nature to Pinterest, and a new media heavy format focusing on videos and music.

As you can see from the video below the new site is a major change up from the current layout and a major leap from the traditional design most of the original users were likely accustom to.

On the landing page is an email submission form for notification of when the new launch will begin along with the promise that MySpace will "stay true to our roots."
We’re hard at work building the new Myspace, entirely from scratch. But we’re staying true to our roots in one important way—empowering people to express themselves however they want. So whether you’re a musician, photographer, filmmaker, designer or just a dedicated fan, we’d love for you to be a part of our brand new community.

MySpace's new owners, which includes actor/recording star Justin Timberlake, are trying to revamp the service in hope of restoring the glory of the MySpace of 2008, when it was ranked the No. 1 social network world wide. The site which was originally bought by NewsCorp for $580 million in July 2005 was sold in June 2011 to Specific Media Group and Justin Timberlake who jointly purchased the company for approximately $35 million.

The new changes while significant are a bit out there for me. I for one don't care for the overly image heavy design and the overall look and feel. I've said it time and time again people like their social media sites clean and simple. That is one of the things that drew users away from MySpace and towards Facebook back in they day and that is what is now causing more users to turn their backs on Facebook now. This media laden overhaul certainly won't appeal to me or most of the geeks out there that I know.

Koobface Worm Reaches Out To More Sites

Researchers at security vendor F-Secure said yesterday in a blog about the Koobface worm that the new infection is designed to spread to other popular social networking sites, including MySpace.com, MyYearbook.com, BlackPlanet.com, and Friendster.com.

The Koobface worm has been spreading like wildfire through Facebook since it was first reported last week by McAfee Avert Labs. The virus uses Facebook's private messaging system to spread itself across the social networking site. Facebook users receive a message from an infected profile that offers them a video link paired with the message, "You look just awesome in this new movie." The link takes users to a separate Website that recommends installing an update to watch the video. But the download is actually the virus itself, and installing it leads to another infected computer.

"Facebook is already aware of this [new] threat and is purging the spammed links from their system. But with dozens of Koobface variants known to exist, the situation is likely to get worse before it gets better," Craig Schmugar of McAfee Avert Labs wrote on the company's blog. "It's important to note that spammed links leading to Koobface are likely to come from infected friends, reminiscent of early mass-mailing worms."

The newest version of Koobface (W32/Koobface.CZ) is actually a resurgence of an older version of the same virus which was reported by Kaspersky Labs in July. Kaspersky warned users then that the two variants the new worm, Net-Worm.Win32.Koobface.a. and Net-Worm.Win32.Koobface.b, where capable of attacks on both MySpace and Facebook.

If the virus is not properly removed it will turn affected computers into "zombies" or bots, allowing hackers to control those infected computers to either spread more malicious code or ro carry out attacks on other systems.

Facebook has posted generic instructions for it's users to follow on how to remove the infection. Essentially they tell users to change their passwords and immediately run a virus scan using one of these sites:
Even if you haven't been hit with the virus I'd suggest you take a proactive approach and download one of the several free antivirus programs such as AVG, Avira or Avast. And as I always point out a little common sense browsing goes a long way. If you reach a site that tells you you need to update your software its always best to leave and go directly to the software vendor's site.

MySpace Launches Profile 2.0

MySpace continues to add new function and features to its site and now comes the launch of a new profile and editor, Profile 2.0. MySpace doesn't seem to feel it’s ready for mainstream U.S. use yet, so they’ve launched it for trial to Canadian users however anyone can try it out with the steps listed below.

The process to activate the update is fairly simple. Begin by logging out of your account, then visit MySpace Canada and log in. You’ll notice a thin message in the top center column of your user profile, just above the status and mood box. Click the corresponding link, and another link, followed by yet one more link, and you’re in.

The new editor seems easy enough to use and it cuts out the need to know any coding. You have the option of choosing a theme or using the advanced edit which will allow you to change your backgrounds, borders and fonts as you'd like.

The layout editor will allow you to move your modules around and arrange them however you want. You can select to stick with the traditional two columns, use a single column or use three columns. Then you can move things around like your about me, blog or music player. Withing each module there is also the option to remove that module entirely, edit its visibility to allow friends only or for modules with multiple sections (ie interests) you can add/remove visible sections.

I've been tinkering with my personal profile for a few days, and so far I like the new options. Its nice to be able to move modules around to anywhere I want them, and its great leaving some of the css behind. But I see a few things I don't like and I'm not sure if they are bugs or complete changes.

For one no matter what I do I can't apply a full size background image. I've tried with both the editor and direct css, neither work with large image sizes. You can use the editor to add smaller images that will be tilled but that appears to be it. I haven't tested the size limitation but the image I was using was 1024x768.

With the recent release I found the work around. In the CSS editor you apply the appropriate CSS for your background and it works fine. You do not need to add style tags, just add in your CSS:

    body
    {
    background-image:
    url('http://urlofimage.com');
    background-repeat: no-repeat;
    background-attachment: fixed
    }

Also I don't see an option to change border styles. I've tried a few different methods using the CSS editor but so far no joy. There doesn't seem to be any option for directly adding divs, or any other html for that matter, to individual modules. For instance adding in scroll boxes or extra headings. So it looks like some of the things people like to add in might be forcefully removed.

If you do give it a try and decide you don't like the new options or the editor and want to revert to Profile 1.0, you can open the editor by searching for the ‘Customize Profile’ button within the ‘Profile’ drop-down menu. (Don’t click ‘Edit Profile’ or ‘Themes & Layouts.’) Once the editor is opened click ‘Undo.’ This will trigger a pop-up that requests you to choose from three options: “Undo current changes,” “Start from scratch,” and “Switch to Profile 1.0.” Take your pick.

*Update*
Tom has officially announced the roll out of Profile 2.0 to users in the U.S.

Nov 10, 12:00am PT

Today we launched Profile 2.0. The new profile is optional and you can go back to your old profile if you don't like 2.0. Profile 2.0 lets you hide specific profile modules (like comments or friends), lets you drag and drop modules wherever you want, and you can even choose to show parts of your profile to specific friend categories. For those who prefer the simplicity of one-click themes over advanced customization, we've created over 25 profile styles to choose from including Transporter 3, Punisher War Zone, and The Spirit.

Check it out here or click on the "Edit Profile" link above this message to find out how to convert. After converting your profile, the Profile drop down menu will have a new link "Customize Profile" which returns you to the editor with one click.

MySpace Message Center To Use Google Gears

MySpace announced they are offering new functionality in their MySpace Message Center by adding in the use of Google Gears.

MySpace has been lacking the ability for users to actually search their MySpace messages. To go through mail, users have to page through all of their messages until their find the right one. Now when users download and install Gears, they'll be able to quickly search their in-boxes for specific terms or sort messages.

Google's Gears project is an open-source plug-in, which endows browsers with a number of useful features to make them a better foundation for running elaborate software. Gears hasn't caught on widely, but MySpace gives the project more clout. And Google thinks some of Gears' success is actually measured in its influence over the new HTML 5 standard for describing Web pages.

Yahoo, Google, MySpace form non-profit OpenSocial Foundation

Google, Yahoo, and News Corp.'s MySpace.com announced on Tuesday that they have formed the OpenSocial Foundation, a non-profit group to support the OpenSocial initiative that Google kick-started last year as a way to promote a universal standard for developer applications on social-networking sites.

"OpenSocial has been a community-driven specification from the beginning," Joe Kraus, Google's director of product management, said in a joint statement from the three companies. "The formation of this foundation will ensure that it remains so in perpetuity. Developers and websites should feel secure that OpenSocial will be forever free and open."

The OpenSocial Foundation is expected to be formed within 90 days, with more OpenSocial partners from across the Web on board in addition to the three responsible for the announcement.

The specific purpose of the new non-profit, according to a release, is "to ensure the neutrality and longevity of OpenSocial as an open, community-governed specification for building social applications across the web." It's a particularly crucial move for Google, which has been eager to emphasize that OpenSocial is a community standard, not a Mountain View project.

The only major social network not to commit to OpenSocial in one way or another has been Facebook, the site that started the social-networking platform craze in the first place.

And Facebook won't be joining the OpenSocial Foundation, either. "As the largest contributor to the memecached system, Facebook has long been a leader and supporter of open source initiatives but will not join the foundation," a statement from the company read. "The company will continue to evaluate partnership opportunities that will benefit the 300,000 Facebook Platform developers while improving the Facebook user experience."

New MySpace Page and Email

First off I'd like to say thanks to all of our great readers out there, I really appreciate the support. For the most part the blog has been doing very well, and the transition to out new domain has been rather smooth.

I've been working hard over the weekend to get a few changes made and hopefully I've got them all up and running smoothly. I'm still debating the transition to WordPress. I've played around with it and made a few test runs. But so far I haven't found a template or a theme that is to my liking.

So for the recent changes:
First and foremost I've got a new email address. Anyone wishing to contact me for any reason may do so via the new address in my profile. I won't post it here as I'd like to limit the spam as much as possible!

And secondly we are proud to announce our new MySpace page. MySpace is always a great way to meet new people and socialize so we went ahead and joined up. We'd like to invite anyone and everyone to add us as friends.

Flock Adds MySpace Support

The popular Mozilla-based social Web browser Flock added MySpace support. This comes following the recently released MySpace Developer Platform, the updated browser will allow users to surf the Web with their MySpace friends via constant updates on all their actions within the social network.

With the new refinements users can be informed within the browser when friends from MySpace or other supported social networks — like YouTube Photobucket and Flickr — post new photos or videos or when a user has new messages from friends on a social network.

I haven't used Flock in several years, but as you can see from my review I enjoyed my experiences with the browser. With the new additions and recent changes I might have to revisit their site and see how they've progressed.

MySpace Profiles Offering Fake MS Patch

Attackers send new "friend requests" to MySpace users. When clicking on the person's picture or name link to view their profile, it shows a profile page overlaid with what looks like a legitimate Windows "Automatic Updates" pop-up box. Visit EWeek.com for more details.
